18th Century Austrian Painted Cabinet
An Interesting 18th Century Austrian Painted Cabinet with Heart Motifs.
This lovely cabinet retains the original paintwork and a nice dry, untouched surface. The panels to the doors are painted with heart motifs pierced with arrows and a sword and perhaps this piece was made to commemorate a marriage? The original vibrant colours are retained in many places but the overall effect has been mellowed by age and this piece is all the better for it. The cabinet is quite architectural in its design with a moulded plinth with painted quatrefoil motifs and mock painted columns to the pilasters. There are also painted cartouches to each side and the piece retains its original wrought iron hardware which has also aged beautifully and its original key. The piece stands on flattened bun feet.
