19th Century Regency Convex Mirror
SOLD
A Very Fine Regency Convex Mirror with Candle Arms and Eagle Cresting.
The good sized mirror with a delightful aged gilt finish, the frame consisting of a moulding with lotus flower terminals meeting at the four compass points. The mirror has a convex plate and is topped by a cresting of an eagle on a pedestal with leafy branches below. Underneath the plate at the base of the mirror are a pair of intertwined serpents holding candle arms. This is a very finely executed variant on the theme of the convex mirror.
Many mirrors of this sort survive as they were popular for a very long period of time and so when choosing one it is important to search for something a little different that raises one above another. The candle arms and the combination of both eagle and serpent motifs (both popular on their own but less common together) are signs of very superior quality in the this piece.
