19th Century Black Forest Open Armchair
An exceptional 19th Century, elaborately carved 'Black Forest' open armchair of finely carved Linden wood. The top carved crest is of interwoven branches with acorns and oak leaves above the oval, padded and upholstered back which is also surrounded with trailing oak leaves.
The frame is lifelike carvings of tree branches and outswept arms and shaped arm supports have manchette elbow rests. Having padded, upholstered seat with a serpentine front and a shaped, carved apron of acorns and oak leaves to continue the theme. Raised on shaped legs, terminating in original castors with unusual horn wheels.
'Black Forest Ware' is usually adorned with carvings that depict forest animals, forest trees, branches, and leaves. 'Black Forest' carvings were made into all different kinds of furniture and curios. Swiss wood carvers became world-renowned and featured at many international exhibitions.
