19th Century English Regency Mahogany Serving Table
A 19th Century English Regency Mahogany Serving Table With Heraldic Decoration.
This important table was almost certainly supplied by the firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London. The outspreading joints between the frieze and the columnar legs are typical of the firm's designs of this period and the high quality timber and workmanship also points in this direction. Constructed in mahogany throughout with ebony stringing, a favoured combination in the regency period. Standing on four turned column tapering legs.
There is a concealed drawer to the front frieze and, in the centre of the frieze section, a tablet with original painted heraldic decoration. The crest here is almost certainly that of the Greville family, Earls of Warwick. This suggests that this table may once have been part of the furnishings at Warwick Castle or one of the family's other seats. Other pieces from Warwick Castle have been attributed to Gillows over the years so it is likely that the family continued to order from the firm over several generations.
A very interesting table.
