17th Century Dutch Oak, Ebony and Rosewood Cabinet
SOLD
A Fine 17th Century Dutch Cabinet in Bleached Oak with Inlaid Ebony and Rosewood.
As can be seen from the medallion in the centre of the frieze engraved with the date 1653. Dutch furniture of the 17th century was amongst the most technically impressive in Europe and played a crucial role in the development of later 17th century and 18th century furniture in England when William and Mary became rulers of England and brought with them Dutch artisans and associated tastes.
The cornice of the cabinet employs finely carved detail. Both fronts and sides of the cabinet are panelled throughout and the piece stands on typical flattened bun feet. The use of ebony and rosewood as contrasting timbers creates a very visually interesting piece of furniture which is also very practical - both upper and lower sections incorporating shelves in the usual manner. There are also two cleverly concealed drawers in the central section between the two cupboards.
