A Late 17th Century Northern European Chip Carved Oak Coffer.
Northern European in origin, is of pegged construction and fine quality timber is used throughout. Profuse carving which adorns almost all of the front is known as chip carving. The carving is crisp, accurate and well defined and many different geometric motifs have been used including fan paterae, diamonds and squares along with a series of different moulding patterns carved on the stiles. The sides are also panelled. The wavy apron is very distinctive.
Exceptional colour and patination.
