An Attractive Large Scale Pair of Mid 18th Century Italian Rococo Painted Armchairs, Probably Venetian.
These armchairs retaining their original paint and gilt with their modified cloud form top rails, flowing cabriole legs and asymmetrical front seat rails are fine examples of the rococo taste in Italy in the middle of the 18th century. The specific form of these examples suggests that they were likely made in Venice and their size leaves no doubt that they were made for an important house or palazzo.
Italian makers excelled at creating painted furniture during the 18th century and these fine armchairs are excellent examples of the quality of work they were able to produce.
