Large Late 18th Century English Painted Sofa
SOLD
A Large, Fine Late 18th Century English Floral Painted Sofa. c.1800
This fine sofa dates to around the turn of the 19th century with its combination of features suggesting a transitional date. The "French Hepplewhite" front legs, associated with such makers as John Cobb c.1770-1780, are a very unusual choice for a sofa and yet work very well indeed in conjunction with the shaped back which appears to be more of a Sheraton feature and suggests a slightly later date of inspiration. The designer of our sofa clearly took features from a variety of sources and combined them to taste. The decoration of our piece is worked over a plain black ground and includes both neoclassical features such as swags of harebells and the more naturalistic flower painting associated with painted pieces produced in the early regency period.
The sofa is of generous size and fine proportions and is ready for the client's choice of upholstery or could be left in the present wadding finish.
Painted furniture of this date is usually very elegant and this piece is no exception. This intriguing design, combining a variety of elements very effectively in a single piece, is extremely distinctive and is probably a unique survival.
