18th Century French Louis XVI Period Walnut Commode
SOLD
A Very Fine French Louis XVI Period Walnut Commode of Excellent Colour and Patination with Parquetry Top.
The commode of architectural form with a slight breakfront outline and standing on tapering toupie feet. The three drawers with panelled centres, with boxwood stringing and additional wide crossbandings. The drawers retaining the original ormolu escutcheons in the form of leafy swags tied in bows. The top of the commode employs three graduated edge mouldings, a great sign of quality, and is inlaid with two separate parquetry motifs, two stacks of cubes which seem three dimensional due to the skill with which they have been inlaid in a geometric design. The parquetry is contained within a boxwood-strung border and a wide crossbanding, echoing the design of the drawer fronts.
The surface of this commode has acquired a really exceptional patination with a great variation in colour, light and shade. This is a very superior example of a commode from this period.
