18th Century George III Irish Mahogany Windsor Chair
SOLD
A Very Fine Quality Rare Irish Late 18th Century Mahogany Comb Back Windsor Chair.
This lovely armchair is of larger than usual size and excellently proportioned, and has been produced in mahogany of excellent figure which has acquired a fine colour and patination. The comb back design features a combination of plain, flat spindles. Above the spindles is a highly decorative crest rail of essentially bowed form with carved spiralling paterae. The seat is dished in the usual way but with the addition of a carved motif to the front which echoes the central design on the crest rail, tying the design together very well indeed.
The chair stands on typically Irish lion's paw and squat or flattened ball feet which are beautifully carved. It is relatively unusual to see all four feet carved in this manner on a chair of this sort. Like the celebrated gothic Windsors, also often produced in mahogany, this model of chair is very sculptural, looking good when viewed from any angle, and is a very fine example of its kind that would enhance any collection of 18th century furniture.
This is a very rare piece.
