Pair of 19th Century French Love Seats
SOLD
An Unusual Pair of 19th Century French Oak Love Seats or Causeuses in the Empire Style.
The causeuse or love seat in English is a piece of furniture that fits somewhere between a large chair and a sofa and was designed to seat two people in very close proximity to each other. Upholstered in green velvet, these seats incorporate Empire period details such as the very finely carved winged sphinxes utilised as supports for the arm rests and naturalistic paw feet. Each one has a loose squab cushion in matching velvet with a Greek key design on the front - another nod to the Empire period and the renewed interest in Greek classicism.
Love seats are rare pieces of furniture and offer a great deal of versatility as their size makes them easy to place.
