18th Century English Oak Coffer
SOLD
A Fine 18th Century English Oak Coffer with Inlaid Panels of Good Height and Proportions with Exceptional Colour.
An unusual example of a coffer, retaining some 17th century design features and made in the 18th century. It is unusually tall, and stands very well on handsomely moulded stiles. The panels are highly unusual as they are inlaid rather than carved. The nicely executed inlay takes the form of stylised Maltese crosses. The sides of the coffer have the same moulded detailing as used on the front and are panelled.
The coffer retains its original metalware, a cast escutcheon plate on the front and wrought iron hinges to the underside of the lid. The interior is largely plain, there is a small tray section to one side.
