Pair of Early 19th Century Cherrywood Commodes
SOLD
A Very Unusual Pair of Early 19th Century Cherrywood Commodes, Probably Italian.
Standing on four turned legs with stylised toupie feet, these commodes are veneered externally with beautifully figured cherrywood which has been matched very well in order to give a consistent pattern to all of the visible surfaces with a strong vertical grain to the sides and a beautifully bookmatched top. The front of the commodes employ a panelled moulding which is outlined with an ormolu beaded mount which adds great visual interest and definition. When unlocked, the doors to the commodes slide back in to the bodies of the pieces rather than opening on the more common side hinges. This complex feature is a great sign of quality and proof that these commodes were made by an experienced and talented maker. Behind these sliding fronts are three pine fronted long drawers, the top drawer being more shallow in profile to allow room for the doors to slide in over the top. These drawers have brass ring handles and keys.
With their extensive use of light coloured woods and pared-down ornament, these commodes are very much in the Biedermeier taste which was popular in much of Europe during this time. Pieces of this sort are also extremely versatile in contemporary interiors and they are truly timeless designs. The sliding doors on these commodes are extremely unusual.
