19th Century French Empire Period Mahogany Commode
SOLD
A French Empire Period Mahogany Commode with Fine Bronze Mounts. Circa 1820.
Veneered with finely figured mahogany, this lovely commode features three long drawers and is of broadly rectangular outline. The tapering pilasters to the side are classical in their inspiration and act as columnar supports for two fine female bust mounts. The drawer handles employ lion masks. The commode also employs fine feet to the front, in this case in the form of winged claws.
This piece is restrained in its decoration, relying for its decorative effect on the quality of the timber used and the exceptional casting and finishing of the mounts. The three drawers are large and offer plenty of storage space, making this a very practical piece to use.
