18th Century French Cherry Wood Bureau Plat
SOLD
An Exceptional Quality Late 18th Century French Cherry Wood Bureau Plat or Writing Table.
This wonderful piece has a number of very unusual features. It is veneered in cherry and the drawer linings are also solid cherry wood. The frieze blocks, drawer fronts and legs are also ornamented with inlaid rosewood fluting, which has been beautifully executed. Likewise the metalwork is also of very fine quality, the ormolu toes and the drawer handles and escutcheons all being finely cast. The table has pull out slides to each side with finely gilt tooled leather inset in to each of them. The leather top insert has aged beautifully.
Most interestingly the legs on the table unscrew completely for ease of transport. This suggests that the piece might be a very fine example of French campaign furniture, produced for a military officer or government official who might use this desk whilst stationed abroad or on board a ship.
Clearly no expense was spared in the making of this lovely bureau plat and whoever the original owner was, they are sure to have been someone of wealth and importance. A heavy table of the highest quality which must be seen to be really appreciated.
