19th Century French Mahogany Bureau Plat

A 19th Century French Bureau Plat or Writing Table in the Empire Egyptomania Taste of Outstanding Quality.
This fine table is of unusual shape, the cut corners to each side supported by pilasters set at the same offset angle. Each pilaster has Egyptian herm/term figures with the heads and feet beautifully carved. The feet of the piece are wood on brass plinths.
Three drawers to the front frieze in a typical configuration with a longer and shallower central drawer and two deeper but smaller drawers to the sides. Each drawer has a gilt brass escutcheon plate, the side drawers of diamond outline, the central one of shield shape.
Aside from an ebonised moulding to the top, the piece is veneered exclusively in figured mahogany. The top has an inset leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge.
An exceptional piece of French furniture of this period.
