18th Century French Louis XVI Period Gilt Console Table
SOLD
An 18th Century French Louis XVI Gilt Console or Side Table with Marble Top of Substantial Scale.
This large, wonderful table is in the early neoclassical taste with evidence of some continued rococo influence with a sophisticated shape, the front being serpentine. The table has a marble top, with pinkish-reddish tones against a grey background, which follows the shape of the base precisely and also has a beautifully carved moulding to the edge. The frieze has delicately carving leaves and ribbons and carved swags attached to the underside of the apron. The carving on this table is of excellent quality throughout, the sides being as highly ornamented as the front is also a great sign of quality. Standing on turned and fluted legs with guilloche collars above the toupie feet and fine leaf carved collars at the tops. There are two old metal strengthening supports on the back legs, which we have left as they can't be seen when console is placed in a room. They are quite charming and part of its history.
This is an extremely high quality table of good size that was obviously made by a workshop of some importance. A wonderful example of French furniture made in the neoclassical taste.
