18th Century Dutch Red Lacquer/Japanned Side Table
SOLD
A Highly Decorative Mid 18th Century Dutch Red Lacquer or Japanned Side Table.
This interesting side table is entirely japanned in a scarlet red European imitation lacquer with gilt chinoiserie decoration applied on top. The complex shaped top and cabriole legs with hoof feet make it clear that this table was made in the 18th century rococo period in a Dutch workshop. The frieze of the table incorporates a single drawer.
The japanning has survived in excellent condition throughout without any major areas of redecoration. The subject of the decoration is an idealised Chinese landscape with figures in boats, pagodas and foliage. A black painted repetitive floral motif has been used on the edge of the overhanging top.
