Early 19th Century Rustic Table
SOLD
An Early 19th Century Rustic Table With Inlaid Segmented Top.
This intriguing table is a piece of rustic folk art. The top is an example of segmented parquetry, the triangular veneers being combined to form a circular design. There are three graduated mouldings on the side of the top and then an extraordinary darker wood frieze of dramatically varying texture. The frieze is supported on an octagonal column with three fine base mouldings echoing the three mouldings to the top and then four supports. The whole table is an example of chiaroscuro or the mixture or light and dark for decorative effect.
The table has acquired an excellent patination, particularly to the top and the base of the column, and is a very striking piece of functional art.
A really unusual piece of furniture.
