18th Century Italian Parquetry Side Table
SOLD
An Exceptional 18th Century Italian Parquetry Side Table Entirely Decorated with Repeating Geometric Pattern.
This table stands on cabriole legs with split hoof feet and is of serpentine outline, including the delicately-shaped apron to the frieze. Tables of this basic form were popular throughout Europe.
The most eye-catching aspect of this piece is of course the parquetry or repeating geometric inlay. This consists of quartered and bookmatched sections of darker veneers, largely olivewood it would seem, inlaid in squares and divided by a zig zag motif in contrasting lighter timber. The effect is visually stunning and the maker has wisely decided against using any mounts which would just detract from the glory of the veneers. The only metalwork present is a small rococo type brass escutcheon plate. Italian furniture makers were particularly adept at the use of parquetry decoration and this is an exceptionally fine example of that technique.
This is possibly the best parquetry side table we have acquired.
