English George III Mahogany Occasional Table
SOLD
A Very Fine English George III Period Mahogany Occasional Table, Possibly Originally Designed For Use as a Drawing or Artists' Table.
The finely figured top of excellent figure and superb patination and with unusual "flap" section that hangs over the back of the table when not in use above two long but shallow drawers with axe head drop handles and plate escutcheons. Having fretwork brackets and square chamfered legs.
With its two drawers and relatively simple form, it is possible to see this piece as a sophisticated version of the more familiar lowboy. Flaps of this kind found on this piece are rare and was probably intended to provide a surface for drawing or writing on larger sheets of paper, hence the fact that tables like this are sometimes called artists' tables. It is of a convenient height to sit at.
The mahogany is of wonderful colour and is a delight to look at and this is a very practical piece of Georgian furniture.
