Early 19th Century English Regency Chaise Longue
An early 19th century English Regency chaise longue/daybed of traditional form with a scrolled back and fine carved detail, accentuated by gilt detailing and fine laurel wreath mounts on the knees. The turned toupie-type feet have the original brass castors.
Differing from a settee by virtue of only having a support at one end, the daybed found particular favour in the Regency period due to the renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman examples seen in frescos and painted on the vases collected by the connoisseurs of the time. Designs for daybeds featured prominently in the major design books by the likes of George Smith and Thomas Hope and costume prints of the period frequently featured beautiful ladies reclining upon pieces of furniture like the present example.
Daybeds are surprisingly versatile pieces of furniture, suitable as window seats beneath large windows and able to be used against a wall in a lounge or drawing room or even in a bedroom for a touch of period glamour and sophistication. This example has been fully upholstered and is ready for a top fabric of the client's choice to be applied or can be left as it is for a more contemporary look.
This piece is particularly nicely-proportioned and stands well. It is a charming and well-designed piece of high regency furniture of fine quality.
