19th Century Chinese Export Lacquer Writing Table/Cabinet
SOLD
A very fine and small Chinese export lacquer ladies' dressing and writing table with cabinet.
Made in the early 19th century in China for export to the west, this fine cabinet is a fine example of multi-purpose furniture, produced for a wealthy European lady of taste. Decorated throughout with fine black, gold and red lacquer, the piece takes the shape of a bonheur du jour or ladies' writing table, popular in England from the late 18th century onwards. However this piece also incorporates a fitted dressing drawer with compartments for various cosmetics and a small dressing mirror, making it clear that this piece was designed as a centrepiece. This would have been produced in the regency period when George IV's Brighton Pavilion made chinoiserie fashionable once again amongst a particular group of wealthy connoisseurs.
The lacquer has survived in very good condition and this is a striking and charming example.
